Task 4 - metaphors we think with: the role of metaphor in reasoning - Crime and criminal justice system designed to deal with crime impose costs on society. Public discourse about crime is saturated with metaphor. Increases in prevalence described as crime waves, surges, sprees; criminal investigations are hunts where criminals are tracked and caught. Previous work demonstrated using different metaphors can lead people to reason differently about notions like time, emotion, or electricity. Large body of research showed importance of linguistic framing in reasoning. Purpose of research: investigate role of metaphor in reasoning about domain of societal importance: social policy on crime whether different metaphors lead people to reason differently and in turn leads them to propose different solutions. Further illuminate mechanisms through which metaphors can shape understanding and reasoning. Focus on two contrasting metaphors: crime as virus and crime as beast.
