Chapter 5 the language system: signs, structure, selection. Grammar and vocabulary is necessary but not sufficient condition for communicative success. Language proficiency requires: understanding the meanings of words and phrases in particular contexts, knowing how to adjust your language to the context in which the interaction occurs, . In any field of activity, every speaker and writer needs to decide not only on their broad communicative goals, but also on how exactly they intend to reach these. The answers to these questions depend partly on what the speaker/writer wants to accomplish but their freedom of choice is constrained by the options that the language they are using makes available. Signs can be spoken, written, sung, finger-tapped or created by any other means that is fit for purpose. Semiotics: the study of sign and how they make meaning. Ferdinand de saussure"s main contribution to how we understand language was to develop a model of what signs are and how they work.
