The world is not small for everyone: inequity in searching for knowledge in orgarnisations (sign. The article talks about that in companies sometimes individual"s tend to be affected in their search for knowledge because of being part of the minority (gender, race, culture, etc. ) Individual"s fall in two dimensions: 1) periphery or 2) homophily. The authors examine how this two dimensions can affect individuals in the organisations. Small-worlds argument is that individuals are connected to one another through a seemingly number of intermediary contacts, network structure is characterised by high local clustering and short global separation. Two organisational theories (combination of the small world & traditional intraorganisational network) Concept of core-periphery status (network centrality, tenure and gender) Individuals feel cut off from critical information flows and faces difficulties in when conducting efficient searches. Expert-related centrality (erc) length of the path through the network that has the lowest number of intermediaries between a searcher and a set of topic experts.
