ECON 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Data Mining, Construct Validity, Team Dynamics
Document Summary
Big data - has: high volume, high velocity - rate at which data is created, high variety - different types, high value - created with analysis. Business intelligence is a broad category of applications, technologies, and processes for gathering, storing, accessing, and analysing data to help business users make better decisions. Analytics is an umbrella term for data analysis applications: descriptive (reporting, olap, dashboards, data visualisation) - backward looking, revealing what has occurred. Golden path analysis - predictive/discovery analytics technique, which involves the analysis of large quantities of behavioural data to identify patterns of events/activities that predict customers" actions. Benefits: output and productivity gains, asset utilisation, return on equity and market, competitive advantage, government"s use. Scale-out architecture, in which hundreds or thousands of low-cost commodity servers are placed in parallel. Each server has multiple cpus and large, shared memory caches. Data is spread across the servers, and processing takes place in parallel.
