ECON 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Global Sourcing, Demand Characteristics, Geopolitics
Document Summary
A taxonomy for selecting global supply chain strategies (christopher, martin, helen peck, and denis towill. "a taxonomy for selecting global supply chain strategies. " International journal of logistics management, the 17. 2 (2006): 277-287. ) It is now increasingly accepted that one size does not fit all when it comes to designing supply chain strategies to support a wide range of products with different characteristics sold in different markets. Fisher drew on examples from a diverse range of consumer products, such as food, fashion and automobiles, to show why different supply chain solutions are required depending whether products are functional or innovative . The manufacturing strategy should be tailored to match the required order winning criteria; sourcing- and operation strategy, and route-to-market need to be appropriate to specific product/market conditions. Fisher identifies two main product characteristics: functional products tend to have stable and predictable demand with long lifecycles. Innovative products generally have unpredictable demand with short lifecycles.
