Communication constitutes all the activities associated with these functions. In order to get a strategy off the ground, any manager needs to engage in communication: talking and listening, writing and reading, arguing, persuading, cajoling, requesting or commanding, as the case may be. Implementing the strategy will involve constant communication > reports, meetings. All the structures that make up organisations, and the process that keep them going, are created through, and sustained by communication. 1. 1. 2 managerial roles viewed through the communication lens. Leader: taking responsibility for the work of others; motivating employees. Liaison: making contacts outside their own unit (i. e. , their organisation or department) Looking in and looking out: outward-facing: activities that bridge, or span, the boundaries between organisations, or between organisational units > boundary-spanning, some roles may face both inwards and outwards.
