International relations: study of the relations among states, sometimes peaceful, sometimes not. One of the concerns of ir is to understand what have led to war, in order to prevent war among states in the future. Thus, the purpose of ir aims to ensure peaceful relations among states. Idealistic and normative dimension: young discipline: 1920"s onwards. Before 17th and rise of the nation-state, also relations between political entities (city-states, imperia, states) Ir as a discipline: systematic study of ir, looking for recurring patterns, looking for explanations how states went to war. Theories of ir: theories: mechanisms, instrument to focus your research on variables and thereby select facts, theoretical pluralism. Ir theories are products of their time, produced by people that are influenced by their national or international background. Ex: wwi theories developed by scholars of that time: theories supported ideologies, realism vs. idealism/liberalism; constructivism, marxism, feminism, course on european integration later in the year.
