Obsessions: thoughts, images, ideas or urges that are persistent, that uncontrollably intrude on consciousness, and that usually cause significant anxiety or distress. Compulsions: repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels he or she must perform. Obsessive-compulsive disorder: experiencing anxiety as a result of obsessional thoughts and the inability to carry out the compulsive behaviors. Ocd belonged to anxiety disorders in dsm-iv but was moved into own category in dsm- V together with hoarding, hair-pulling disorder, skin-picking disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder. Knowing that own thoughts and behaviors are irrational. Begins in young age (boys between 6 and 15 years; girls between 20 and 29) Compulsive behaviors can be time consuming or harmful. 66% of people with ocd are also significantly depressed (+ panic attacks, phobias, and substance abuse are common) 1-3% of people will develop ocd at some time in their live (excluded people that show symptoms but do not meet the criteria)
