The state: a political association, that establishes sovereign jurisdiction within defined territorial borders and exercises authority through a set of permanent institutions. State institutions are public; collective decisions that affect public interests: rights to vote, tax, laws on everyday actions. Sovereignty; the state has the final authority, stands above all other associations, no power is superior to itself. Monopoly on legitimately wage war; legitimate authority to evoke violence separates the state from any other kind of organisation. But the violence has to be legitimate; supported by the law; endorsed by parliament; sanctioned by other institutions. Territorial association; they encompass the citizens and non-citizens within a territorial boundary. The state seeks to legitimise decisions which they believe benefit the common good of society; nationalist approach. Close connection between the state and the nation. The state is not the same as a society or a market economy; only engage in political or public decision.
