Because p and b change the meaning, those two sounds are distinct phonemes of the language. Languages in which the sound pitch of a spoken word is an essential part of its pronunciation and meaning are known as tonal language. Morphology: morphology: the study of morphemes, morphemes: distince from phonemes. the smallest units of sound that carry a meaning.
