Document Summary

Specialized cardiac muscle cells that cardiac cells that carry impulses throughout the heart musculature, signaling the chambers to contract in the proper sequence. Signals are only transmitted via av node. Alters rates of contraction set by sa node. Increases rate and force of contractions: cervical and thoracic chain ganglia. Coronary arteries: vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. Coronary veins: vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood from heart muscle to right atrium. Both have 3 layers, but differ in thickness. Arteries: carry blood away from the heart, usually carry oxygenated blood. Veins: carry blood to the heart, usually carry deoxygenated blood, broad and lumen valves, lumen means light, open space, veins have valves, arteries do not. Innermost: tunica media, middle, tunic externa, outermost. Elastic/conducting arteries: largest arteries near heart. Muscular distributing arteries: lie distal to elastic arteries. Walls are very thick: so they have own blood vessels, called vasa vasorum. Diameters range from 1 cm to . 3 mm.
