Document Summary

Biol 150 principles of molecular & cellular biology. We reviewed the complicated photosynthetic process by which green algae and plants use the energy of light to create new glucose molecules. In the light reactions, chloroplasts collect and use photons to run an electron transport chain that is surprisingly similar to that of the mitochondria. Light of the correct wavelength can cause chemicals to change their 3d orientation, which can alter the structure and activity of enzymes; this is how the receptors in our eyes work. Here, red and blue light is absorbed by chlorophyll (it reflects green light) sitting in the middle of the enzyme photosystem ii in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. The energized enzyme then rips electrons off of water to create oxygen gas as well as free protons in the thylakoid lumen that can be used to synthesize atp.
