Spouses make up most caregivers, with adult offspring in second. 30% of caregivers are wives, 18% husbands, 29% daughters, 6% sons, 17% other. For every 1 elder in a nursing home, 2 or more are cared for by family. Caregiving generally lasts 5-7 years or more with up to 35 hours/ week spent caregiving. Informal caregiving: providing help to those who are unable to provide for themselves. Of caregivers are married and 50% are employed full time. Undue influence: abusive behavior where caregiver uses role to exploit trust, dependency, and fear of another. Changes in marital intimacy, psychological well being, participation in household tasks, social integration. Stress when parent is demanding, critical, unappreciative, or lack of support from family. Daughters provide hands on and personal care. Sons provide help with chores, transportation, and finances. Women generally make less money so they can exit workforce easier to provide care. Working while caring because of work/ family conflicts.
