HIST 2112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Grady Memorial Hospital, Cash Crop, White Supremacy
Chapter 19- The south and the west transformed (1870-1890s)!
South and west provide new opportunity.!
The Hope for a new south- the “hope” of Henry Grady (GRADY HOSPITAL). The hope
of progressive looking, liberal men, in the south, had a vision for the south to join the
north and the rest of the country. Hope to have:!
"1."Diversified economy!
"2."Industrial Development (Build industry and build market, pay people to work, in
the south)!
"3."Move away from a one cash-crop economy (cotton).#!
"4."Democracy of small farmers (every man with family has 10-30 acres, every body
votes)!
"5."Expanded public services/education (South at this point had very few public
schools). Get away from White Supremacy System.!
The reality of the New South:!
Little economic diversification (still had one cash crop economy)!
Culturally Old (Still in many parts of the south)!
Virtual slavery ( second class citizenship)- (look up these two terms)!
tenant farmers -crop lien system!
-sharecroppers -crop lien system!
-convict labor and peonage!
-“Loaner” convicts - local guy pays bail for the convicts to come work to pay off bond.#!
*arrested!
*rented out#!
*debt never repaid!
*Stuck for “Life”!
Politics in the new South!
Social Deferences & Boss Hogg (each county is ran by the wealthiest plantation
owner)#!
Redeemers take control and “redeem”!
Reconcile tradition with innovation!
After reconstruction, these plantation owners decided how to run the south, and were
called Redeemers because they were redeeming the south from how the yankees took
control. We will do things kinda differently, but still stick with the status quo.#!
If you were one that wanted to grant blacks freedom= you were called a Bourbon!
If you were not one that wanted to grant blacks freedom = you were called a Redeemer!
No difference, just two different perspectives.#!
Define the South for the next 75 years: keep south segregated, with white supremacy
system!
