ES 2100 Lecture 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
Physical activity and fitness with age, sex, and ethnic differences: Data suggests that people tend to engage in less pa as they get older. Moreover, estimates show that fewer than 5% of the population are active at recommended levels: Should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily: It is very important to encourage young people to participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age, that are enjoyable, and that offer variety. Although often assumed, the evidence suggests that the relationship between childhood and adulthood physical activity is poor. Sport participation, however, may be more strongly associated with the relationship between childhood and adulthood physical activity. Small ethnic differences in pa have also been reported; cultural factors may play a role: I. e. how is pa and fitness valued, religious norms, recreational availability, etc. Recommendations: children and adolescents, should perform 60 minutes of daily physical activity.
