Document Summary

Chemistry: the study of the nature, properties, and transformation of matter. Matter: anything that has mass and occupies space, that is, things you can see, touch, taste, or smell. Scientific method: the process of observation, hypothesis, and experimentation used to expand a body of knowledge. Make observations about nature and ask questions about what you observe. Propose a hypothesis, which states a possible explanation of the observations. Several experiments may be done to test the hypothesis. When results of the experiments are analyzed, a conclusion is made as to whether the hypothesis may be true or false. Property: a characteristic useful for identifying a substance or object. These include size, color, and temperature, as well as chemical composition and chemical reactivity. Physical change: a change that odes not affect the chemical makeup of a substance or object. Chemical change: a change in the chemical makeup of a substance. Pure substance: a substance that has a uniform chemical composition throughout.
