Chapter 11 & Chapter 12 Key Terms
1. Conflict: the expressed struggle that occurs when interdependent parties, such as group
members, perceive incompatible goals or scarce resources and interference in achieving
their goals
2. Deviate: a group member who differs in some important way from the rest of the group
members; opinion or innoviative deviates can help groups examine alternatives more
thoroughly by forcing the group to take a closer look at something
3. Task conflict: conflict resulting from disagrements over ideas, information, reasoning or
evidence
4. Relationship conflict: conflict resulting from personality clashes, likes, dislikes, and
competition for power.
5. Process conflict: conflict resulting from disagreements about how something is done and
member contributions to the group
6. Inequity conflict: conflict about perceived unequal workloads or contributions to the
group effort
7. Coalition: members who band together to pool their resources and power to try to
increase their bargaining leverage
8. Distributive approach: the conflict management approach that assumes fixed resources
must be distributed among parties to the conflict; thus, whatever someone wins, someone
else loses
9. Integrative approach: the conflict management approach that assumes that solutions can
be created to satisfy every party to the conflict
10. Avoidance: the passive conflict management style that ignores a conflict
11. Accommodation: the conflict management style in which one person appeases or gives in
to the other
12. Competition: the uncooperative, aggressive conflict management style in which one
person attempts to dominate or force the outcome of his or her advantage
13. Collaboration: the assertive, cooperative conflict management style that assumes a
solution can be found that fully meets the needs of all parties to a conflict
14. Compromise: the conflict management style that assumes each party must give up
something to get something
