Benedict of nurcia establishes a monastery in italy and sets forth a rule of living in a religious community, work one should do, how one should be active. Days were taken up with specified prayers, have a very meager diet (no meat when sick), receive wine, and do a lot of work that has spiritual significance. They had to take part in spiritual reading, needed well-stocked library and needed to think critically on the texts.
