Geology GEOL-G 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Kitchenware, Responsible Government, Landfill
Document Summary
Each person creates more than 4 pounds of solid waste per day. Waste management of trash begins with placing litter in a garbage can. Next is collecting garbage from trash cans and placing it in larger waste bins. If you live at home, you have a garbage can in the garage. In an apartment, you must take your garbage to a dumpster. In a commercial/non-residential building, a nice friendly janitor or housekeeper collects the garbage. Next a garbage truck picks up the waste and heads to a landfill or transfer station. A transfer station is a place where trash is collected from many average sized garbage trucks, compacted in a giant compacter, and then loaded into larger trucks for delivery to a landfill or incinerator. The waste industry costs over 40 billion dollars, but it also employs over 360,000 people.
