Be able to compile programs into a language can understand using visual studio. Language that computers understand is known as machine language. Consists of a variety of 1"s and 0"s in varying order and frequency: represent the opening and closing of circuits. Very time consuming to write, however works extremely well and fast. A language that contains english-like statements and commands. Examples: cobol, fortran, basic, c, pascal, c++, java. Based on the idea of using logical procedure to input data, perform an operation, and output an answer. Can be put into a flow chart and understood without knowing much detail about the program. Uses objects instead of action and data instead of logic like structured programming does. Programs designed using objects which interact with each other. Developed at bell labs by dennis ritchie in 1972. Evolved from bcpl and b, high level languages. Became very popular due to the fact that it was hardware independent.
