Document Summary

Cytoplasm includes everything within the plasma membrane except the nucleus. The cytoplasm has three components: inclusions, cytosol and organelles. Inclusions are large molecular arrays like pigment granules. Cytosol is the liquid part (part solution, part gel or colloid). The solvent is water and the solutes include ions, enzymes, sugars and amino acids. The cytosol is the site of much of the cell"s metabolism. Organelles carry out specific functions within the cytoplasm. Many are small, membrane-bound compartments their membranes have lipids and proteins suited to their unique function. Membrane- bound organelles include the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, cilia and flagella. Other organelle do not have a membrane and are in contact with the cytosol directly. These are the ribosomes, cytoskeleton, centrioles and centrosome, and proteosome. A cell has 100"s - 1000"s of mitochondria, depending on its energy needs. If a cell"s energy needs increase, the mitochondria will replicate to make more mitochondria.
