GEOG 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Industrial Revolution, Acid Rain, Allegheny National Forest
Document Summary
Forestry 11/15/2017: occurs more in south america, africa, and asia, u. s. is world leader in timber production, ^not losing a lot but we are harvesting a lot. Old growth: forests that have not been touched, takes a long time to develop (longer than a human lifespan: diverse, varies in different soils, insects, animals, plants. Second growth: may look like mature forest, but lacks the richness of true old growth forests: forest that has regrown after the industrial surge. Plantation forests: none of the richness of old growth, lack variety: attempt to maximize one species and remove another. Ecosystem services: benefits to humans that extend from leaving nature intact: ex. Storm water management: disturbance: an event that restarts an ecosystem, maintain diversity, and allows regeneration/replacement of mature trees, ex. brush fire (all fires are not bad for forests!, (cid:862)gaps(cid:863): holes in the canopy, competition: for sunlight.
