Maintenance: just repeating over& over to self, effective for stm, not for ltm transfer. Failures of maintenance & rehearsal (craik , watson 1973): given list of words, 1 at a time, asked to remember the last worked that begins with letter p. Repeated for number of lists ~30, not very mentally straining. At end of experiment given surprise recall test for all p-words: recall isn"t effected by # of intervening items, more rote repetition (maintenance rehearsal) of item doesn"t increase probability of ltm storage transfer.
