HIST 113 Lecture 3: Chapter 3 - 1660-1750
Document Summary
Mercantilism: using the colonies to further the home countries wealth. Through resources and monitoring economic issues, the home country is able to prosper, ensuring they receive more than they give. Navigation laws were made to try and even out control over global trading affairs. (the dutch had previously maintained this) The navigation laws ensured england was a major trading base, and all products had to pass through it. Due to these economic boosts, english colonies prospered, and doubled in size. This allowed them to take over new netherland, changing it to new york. It became a major outpost for english business. The change of government had negative impacts for women and blacks, but positive for the ruling elite. This was a pact that benefitted both indian and englishmen. A charter was created to appease the complainers. They said they were being oppressed, and with the creation of the charter were now able to take part in government issues.
