SOC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Nonverbal Communication, Chronemics, Microexpression
Document Summary
Nonverbal communication is a complex system of body language that conveys a great deal about what we feel is important. The adage it"s not what you say that is important; it"s how you say it is certainly true. Generally, you rely on a spectrum of cues (eye contact, type of walk, body position) that help you to ascertain if a person appears to be friendly or not. Of the different types of nonverbal communication listed above, body language (particularly facial expressions and gestures), eye contact, and proximity are the ones you are probably most familiar with. It is important to note that they may be familiar from a. Canadian perspective, but that there will be some major differences depending on one"s culture. This might include different norms around things like eye contact, proximity, or tactile behaviours. Additionally, some of the messages we convey to others can be unconscious. What you might have picked up on are what researchers call micro-expressions.
