Any number of people with similar norms, values, and expectations who regularly interact with one another. Insofar as groups are our link to the larger society, we can use our acquaintances in groups to make connections with people in different social circles. So, a social network is a series of social relationships that links a person directly to others and indirectly to still more people. A strong tie is a person we know directly, like our friends and family members. A weak tie is an acquaintance of a friend or family member. Social institutions: organized patterns of beliefs and behavior centered around basic social needs. Functional requisites: society must accomplish these to survive: replacing personnel-people die or leave the group, teaching new recruits- group can"t survive unless members accept responsibilities and established behaviors of group. C. producing and distributing goods and services to members: preserving order and protecting selves from attack, providing and maintaining a sense of purpose.
