Behavior which appears to violate society"s norms actually represents adherence to norms of a group. Exceptions and circumstances allow violation of norms. Sanctions are penalties and rewards for conduct with regard to a social norm. Values are collective conceptions of what is considered good, desirable, and proper-or bad, undesirable, and improper- in a culture. they are general set of objectives people have in society - reflect what people prefer. Values influence people"s behavior, and are criteria that we use to evaluate others they depend on culture and what is most important. Most values remain stable during a person"s lifetime. Functionalists believe that stability in society depends on a consensus and support of society"s members. Conflict theorists believe that a common culture exists, but it maintains privileges of certain groups, who enforce norms. Dominant ideology is a set of cultural beliefs and practices that help maintain powerful social, economic, and political interests.
