PSYC 30 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Meta-Analysis, Arms Control
Document Summary
Unilateral concessions are useful for beginning the peace process, but extended negotiations are usually required to reach a final agreement. Negotiations on complex issues such as nuclear arms control or efforts to make peace in volatile regions, often go on for years or even decades. But negotiations are not restricted to the international scene. Unions and management engage in collective bargaining to establish employee contracts. Divorcing couples negotiate the terms of divorce, by themselves or through lawyers. Dating couples negotiate about which movie to attend. Families negotiate about who does which annoying household chores. Negotiations occur whenever there is a conflict that the parties wish to resolve without getting into an open fight or relying on an imposed legal settlement. Perhaps the most common successful outcome is a 50-50 compromise. Here, the negotiators start at extreme positions and gradually work toward a mutually acceptable midpoint. Some negotiators, however, achieve an even higher level of success.
