PSYC 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Mesolimbic Pathway, Basal Ganglia, Mesocortical Pathway
Document Summary
Craik and tulving proposed that the more deeply you process info the better it is encoded. Example: memorize list of words with different depths of processing. Perhaps it is the number/area of brain areas involved. Classically conditioned emotional response that involves the amygdala. For an animal to produce a conditional emotional response, the amygdala needs to be working sends to hypothalamus and need cerebellum for a motor response. Emotional events, words, pictures increase the likelihood of encoding and consolidation. Amygdala always recruited when emotion in memory. Adds an emotional tag to the memory. Propranol reduces heart rate trick the brain into thinking the body is calm while reliving traumatic memories. Amygdala gets responses from the rest of body (tricks the anygdala) Thought to change the emotional content of the memory during reconsolidation (protein synthesis blockade during reconsolidation in animals produces forgetting) Evidence that reconsolidation can change aspects of the memory in this case emotional content.
