8 views2 pages

Document Summary

A theory is a general principle or set of principles that explain how a number of separate facts are related to one another. Examples of research topics: nature of memory, brain function, motivation, emotional expression, causes of mental disorders. Examples of research topics: methods to improve memory, methods to improve motivation, ways to decrease stress, therapies to treat mental disorders. This method is used to determine degree of relationship (correlation) between tow characteristics, events, or behaviours, it is useful in making predictions but it cannot determine cause. A correlation between two variables does not prove that a cause- effect relationship exist between them. There is a correlation between stress and illness, bu that does not mean that stress necessarily causes illness. Both stress and illness may result from another factor, such as general health. Researchers develop a hypothesis on what they think the outcome of their experiment will be.
