Social cognition: how ppl think about themselves and the world. Schemas: help organize our behaviors and thoughts. Mental structures that organize our knowledge about the social world (framework). Encompass knowledge about many things: other people ourselves special events (scripts: about a specific event) e. g. , what do you do when you come into a classroom. Useful for organizing and making sense of the world. For filling in gaps in our knowledge. Self-fulfilling prophecy: making our schemas come true. Perceiver"s expectations perceiver"s behavior toward target target"s behavior toward perceiver perceiver"s expectations etc. , E. g. , party w a friend. friend tells you that joe is a jerk. Then he acts back differently back towards you. You confirm your thinking about joe that he"s a jerk he fulfills your expectation. Schemas affect the way we act w towards others and how others act towards us. Pygmalion in the classroom study (rosenthal & jacobsen, 1968)
