Document Summary

Can"t morally blame george: george was brainwashed into robbing a bank. Has the free will, but desire isn"t achieved in the right way. We typically don"t praise or blame agents who were forced or coerced into acting: moral responsibility requires that one could have done otherwise. Incompatibilism: moral responsibility is incompatible with force or coercion. Genetics, environment, etc. , has influence on our choices. Undermine our freedom to form and act upon our desires. One way to reject an argument is to reject its soundness, by denying a premise. Pre-action is one that"s neither determined nor random. Denying premise one (of determinism) doesn"t help. To say an action is causally necessitated is not to say that i could not have done otherwise. An action is free insofar as if i had chosen to do otherwise, i would have done otherwise i. e. , we act freely when we act in accordance with our desires.
