Five factors that can determine the speed of norm formation. The number of people who have already conformed to the norm. The quality of the interpersonal relationships within the group. Certain group characteristics encourage group think, such as: A norm that discourages debate and open discussion. Critical thinking is not encouraged or rewarded. Members think their group can do no wrong. Members apply pressure to those who do not support the group. Members often believe they have reached a true consensus. Members want to reinforce the leader"s beliefs. Social loafing (problems when a group is too big) the tendency for individuals to expend less effort when working collectively than when working individually. Members believe others are not doing fair share. Results of group cannot be attributed to any one person. Others are lazy, then equity is established by doing less work yourself. Small group size may lead to problems with big tasks, but so can big sizes with small tasks.
