Black person would count as 3/5ths of a person. 1860= the last straw- republican party nominated lincoln, whose stance = clear, slavery will not spread to the north. 1861= his election and s. carolina succession= foregone conclusion 7 states= confederacy. Thus, u. s. fought war that grew out of sectionalism .
