Traumatic in an established close relationship because expectation of honesty grows (dependability, trust) The more intimate the relationship, the more important honesty is and the subject matter (greater are feelings of betrayal when this is compromised) Hinting (ex: i think the desserts are overpriced to hint you"re too fat) Success depends on ability of other person to pick up the hint. Telling the truth in failing to speak truth can show your lack of confidence or integrity. If it leads to avoiding harm, to protect some larger truth, leads to greater truth. Issues related to tannen book (you just don"t understand) Sex = biologically determined differences between men and woman (anatomical) Gender = how you socialize (social/cultural definitions of masculinity and femininity) Traits and behavior that are socially defined as masculine and feminine. Great change in gender roles over last half century as women move from housewife to out in the working world (public sphere)
