COMM 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Phatic Expression, Interpersonal Relationship
Document Summary
Most important in romantic relationship: initiating stage show interested in someone and that you"re worth getting to know (brief); follows handshake, innocuous subjects (phatic communication) Use networking: use third party to bring about contact. Offer yourselves to other people (put yourself in favorable position to be approached) Stand next to person, hanging out where you know that person plays. Much of flirting fits in this stage and second stage (can occur in deeper stages too though: experimenting stage search for common ground w/other person and for favorable qualities. Much of this information is found through small talk. Slowly, ask fewer questions and expose more about self. If you like what you hear, can lead to liking and greater sense of attraction: intensifying stage stage where you say there is an actual relationship. Or indirectly (spending lots of time, ask for support, getting to know the partner"s friends and family)
