By the late 18th century, collecting ancient objects was a popular pastime. Complimented the classical education of the time. Archeology was a pursuit of the rich and famous. He was the 1st director of musee napoleon (louvre) Found in 1799 in the nile river delta. British got it from the french in the treaty of alexandria in 1801. Helped break the code of the egyptian hieroglyphs. 1st established a department in antiquities in 1807. Marble from greece while it was occupied, english proceeded to buy these. Marbles from ottomans: greece won independence in 1832. 19th century museums and countries went to great lengths to get monuments and antiques. Cleopatra"s needle moving it to london was difficult and at one point a cable snapped during a storm and it feel into the ocean, but was recovered quickly. Obelisk is now located in paris, egypt got a clock that never worked.
