Belief was native americans had been there short time (truly there 20,000 years), Patterning: a regular relationship between material objects & space. Usually products of nature are not pattered whereas the products of human action are patterned. Artifacts: portable objects modified by human action (tools, ceramic objects) Features: non-portable human made remains (this room) Ecofacts: natural remains that have cultural significance (pollen) Sites: loci(location) of human activity, a spatial cluster of artifacts, features and/or ecofacts. There is a dialectical relationship between human action & material patterns (desk position=friendliness/openness, desk raised up/sloppy chair, lecture hall room organization) Human action creates patterns even as the patterning of material things structures human action. Archaeologists study patterning in time & space.
