Historical archaeology - archaeology during the period of time during european expansion. Study of human behavior through material remains, for which written history in some way affects its interpretation. Early 20th century historical archaeology was primarily concerned with supplementing historical records, serving as a handmaiden of history, aiding in the interpretation of famous historical sites for the public. Latter 20th century processual archaeologists began to refine archaeological methods and theories using historical documentation as a control; began to examine historically disenfranchised groups in american culture. Characteristics: tends to be post-processual, deals with shorter time periods than prehistoric archaeology, often emotionally as well as temporally close to us. Themes: tends to study historically disenfranchised groups, often tackles questions not answered by historians, many research nature of european colonialism and its effects on indigenous people (critical approach). Fort mose (fl) first free african american settlement in the new world.
