Document Summary

A diary in the strict sense of the term 1967. He is the first to talk about himself in the work he did. This was a big shift because anthropologists before him would write in the voice of god/third person. He wrote about himself in a very idealized way. His diaries revealed that he was more selfish and had convoluted beliefs and views, and that he spent less time in the village than he eluded to in his accounts. He had biases but eliminated them in his research. Must cut oneself off from company of other white men. Remain in close contact with the natives. Large difference between sporadic plunging into the company of natives and being really in contact with them. Become more accustomed to the native"s life once it becomes routine. Quarrels, jokes, family scenes, events usually trivial, sometimes dramatic but always significant, formed the atmosphere of daily life for the ethnographer as well as the natives.
