Both of these found in east africa, at olduvai gorge and west turcana. Found in south africa at sterkfontein, swartkrans, and kromdraai. Australopithecus anamensis - 4. 2 - 3. 9 mya. A. afarensis - 3. 4 - 3 mya. A. africanus - 2. 5 - 1 mya. Found a cleared area with an adjacent pile of stones, along with animal bones (incomplete skeletons), carbon, flake tools. Indicates a sharing of food for safety, transport from the original site. Might be the foundation of a post or fossilized root in the center. Probably a shelter or area where they gathered. This one site alone gives a great insight into much of homo erectus behavior. There are certain sites where there is a collection of mastodon remains, with 19 or 20 in a. Traveled in groups, used fire to cook meat single pile. Homo erectus became fairly successful in killing mammoths.
