People living with mental health disorders and cognitive disabilities (mhd cd) are over- represented within the criminal justice system. Those who experience multiple, complex and compounding disadvantages were more likely to be processed or managed by the criminal justice system. Importantly, there is nothing inherent within people living with mhd cd that makes them more likely to engage in criminal behaviour. Overlapping issues: the experience of living with impairment, and social-structural responses to impairment, the operation and context of criminal justice institutions. Social-structural locations relations to gender, class, sexuality, ethnicity, age and so forth. Some researchers have suggested that the criminal justice system is becoming increasingly relied upon as a way of managing" those with complex needs and multiple disadvantages. People with disabilities are also over-represented as the victims of certain types of crime. E. g. people with intellectual or cognitive impairments are substantially more likely to experience sexual violence.
