PSYCH 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dependent And Independent Variables, Psych
Document Summary
Instruments in which each person is asked the same question in the same way. Strengths: can compare people"s responses easily, can easily collect and score data. Limits: people may not report information accurately, may sacrifice depth of information obtained due to not getting detailed and specific information from/about each person. Gathering information on already existing groups without altering their experiences. You examine this association with a correlation coefficient: strength of association, manner with which they are associated. Correlation coefficient: can range from -1. 0 to +1. 0, size of number shows strength of association. The closer the correlation is to -1. 0 or +1. 0, the stronger the relationship that exists: + sign means that a one variable increases, so does the other variable o. Sign means that as one variable increases, the other decreases. Major strength: allows us to study relationship between variables that we can"t manipulate. Major limitation: correlation does not mean causation.
