Document Summary
Brain waves are co-ordinated activity by the nervous system in which large numbers of neurons fire together. Brain waves are typically measured by an electroencephalogram (eeg) machine. Waking brain waves are called beta waves, and are short and irregular. In the first stage of sleep (nrem1) people start to feel relaxed and the brain waves get slightly larger. After about 10 minutes, the brain enters the second stage of sleep (nrem2) Sleep spindles (short high frequency bursts of activity) appear in stage 2 and are thought to reduce the brain"s sensitivity input. People awakened in stage 2 often deny they have been sleeping. Stage 3 (nrem3) begins about 15 min after stage 2 and is the deepest sleep. People awakened in stage 3 are very groggy. Night terrors most frequently occur in stage 3 and tent to be non-narrative. Rem (rapid eye movement) sleep begins about 45 minutes after stage 3.
