Document Summary
A smart goal clarifies exactly what is expected and the measures used to determine if the goal is achieved and successfully completed. To make goals specific, one must state exactly what is expected, why it is important, where it is going to happen and which attributes are important. A specific goal will usually answer the five w questions: Why: specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. The thought behind this is that if a goal is not measurable, it is not possible to know whether one is making progress toward successful completion. Measuring progress is supposed to help a person stay on track, reach target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs it on to continued effort required to reach the ultimate goal. A measurable goal will usually answer questions such as: A-ttainable: goals are realistic and can be achieved in a specific amount of time and are reasonable.
