Document Summary

Computer-mediated communication (cmc) and social media, such as facebook, twitter and instagram, have blurred the lines between how an individual is viewed by the public and how they view their private selves. This has changed the ways of communication in terms of what we know about one another and what others may know about us. Communication privacy management theory helps to explain the process by which individuals choose to share private information about themselves with others. Because we are aware that one may choose to share only certain information about themselves online, it has the capability of causing some uncertainty when forming relationships through cmc. When deciding whether you are attracted to someone, you consider their personal qualities. Cmc can change the way we see others, in which someone might seem attractive to you when you are instant messaging or emailing but in reality, may not be who you think they are at all.
