Document Summary
Cooperation-an outcome in which 2 or more interacting individuals receive a net benefit from their joint actions, despite the costs to each of the actions. Short term cost of not cooperating is high, thus is socially enforced (policing) Long term cost of not cooperating is high, or a stable strategy because others may stop coopering with you. Jerks may win in the short term, but are screwed in the long term. Reciprocal altruism-exchanges between individuals such that an altruistic act by animal 1 to animal 2 is returned by animal 2 towards animal 1. Game theory-a mathematical tool; when payoff that is received for undertaking an action is dependent upon behavioral responses of others. Priso(cid:374)er"s dile(cid:373)(cid:373)a scenario in which two players can either cooperate or defect. Payoff for a single player defecting is larger than payoff for both cooperating. Evolutionarily stable strategy-strategy, once adopted by a population, will persist and will not be replaced.
