Growth and maturation of the muscle fibers formed during development must occur in order to achieve maximal muscle growth. Ability to introduce additional dna into its cells to maintain growth and repair. Not always orientated parallel to the long axis of the muscle. Some muscles do not extend the entire length of the muscle. Even if that muscle is orientated parallel. Contributes to some error of fiber assessment measurements. Fiber number is generally reported as the apparent muscle fiber number. Means of predicting absolute muscle fiber number for any given muscle. Calculated from the cross sectional area of the muscles and the average packing density i. e. the number of fibers per unit area. Since nitrogen is easy to measure changes in the protein mass of the body can actually be assessed by the difference between n intake and n excretion. Historically and clinically one of the most common measures. Useful for overall body protein balance, but a very static measure.
