AN S 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Simple Squamous Epithelium, Histotrophy, Pyometra
Document Summary
Comprised of four tissue layers as the oviduct and the uterus: Muscularis (smooth muscle)- outer longitudinal and inner circular. Mucosa- ciliated columnars (they beat towards the vagina) Protects content of the vagina and uterus during luteal phases and pregnancy. Answer : progesterone stimulates histotroph production from the endometrial glands - histotroph is great food for microbes, can lead to pyometra. The uterus will become susceptible to infection during high progesterone because the cilia are not as active. However, during high estrogen the cilia become very active and will reduce chances of infection. Interlocking ridges called annular rings (a ewe is larger than a cattle"s) - look like fingers interlocking. Interdigitating prominences (sow) - look like knuckles interlocking. Longitudinal cervical folds (mare) - look like pages of a book. Changes in the mucus content and levels help navigate the sperm cells through the cervix after being deposited by the male.
