Goals of dual language (feb. 26: academic achievement (closes achievement gap, help esl students strengthen home language, biliteracy learning another language, global citizenship or cross-cultural competency. Seal of biliteracy: exam during senior year of high school that shows biliteracy in students. Variations of dual language: partial immersion- half in english, half in l1, total immersion- 90/10 or 80/20, whole school- more community, lots of supports, everyone involved, strand- not all the students, only certain classes, not as much support. Must be an equal number of students for each language. Be careful to not allow the program become an elite language program. Classroom configurations: self-contained: one teacher who speaks both languages, team teaching: two teachers who speak different languages.
